Direct Bank Settlement vs Payment Aggregators: Which Is Better for UPI?

By Kunal Chauhan·Nov 2026·7 min read

Traditional payment aggregators like Razorpay, Cashfree, and PayU act as middlemen — they collect money into an escrow account, take a cut, and then settle to your bank. Direct bank settlement bypasses all of that. Here's what you need to know before choosing your payment infrastructure.

What Is a Payment Aggregator?

A payment aggregator (also called a payment gateway or payment service provider) is a licensed intermediary between your business and the customer's bank. When a customer pays via UPI, the money first goes to the aggregator's escrow account, then the aggregator transfers it to your bank — typically in 2–7 business days.

The aggregator charges a fee for this service — usually 1.4% to 2% per transaction, plus 18% GST on the fee. On a monthly volume of ₹10 Lakhs, that adds up to over ₹21,000 in fees.

What Is Direct Bank Settlement?

Direct bank settlement means the customer's UPI payment goes straight from their account to your bank account— no intermediary, no escrow, no holding period. The payment uses the same UPI rail that powers Google Pay and PhonePe, but instead of routing through a merchant account, it goes directly to your personal or business bank account.

With MyMobPay, you receive a payment link or QR code. When the customer pays, the money hits your bank account within seconds. Our system then automatically verifies the payment by parsing your bank's transaction notification email — no manual reconciliation needed.

When Direct Settlement Makes Sense

Direct bank settlement is ideal for SaaS businesses, freelancers, content creators, and any company processing ₹25,000+ per month in UPI payments. The savings are immediate and scale with your volume.

If you're just starting out with under ₹10,000/month in payments, an aggregator's fees may still be affordable. But as soon as you hit consistent revenue, the 2% cut starts eating into your margins significantly.

Are There Risks?

The main consideration is that direct UPI settlements don't provide the same level of fraud protection and chargeback handling that regulated aggregators offer. However, for digital products and serviceswhere chargebacks are rare, this is a non-issue. You also retain full control over your funds at all times — no risk of an aggregator freezing your account due to 'suspicious activity' reviews.
